Despite being a lackluster student from a tough steelworking background, Rudy perseveres through every obstacle toward his dream.
Moving on, Rudy fights through personal tragedy and a learning disability to transfer to Notre Dame and get a spot on the team. Even then, doesn’t get the chance to play the final game of his senior year. However, thanks to the efforts of his loved ones and supporters, Rudy gets that chance at the last minute. His final game features a classic and inspiring scene of the crowd (including his family and supporters) chanting his name.
Even though it was released 30 years ago, and is set in the late 1960s, Rudy’s themes still resonate today. It’s a timeless underdog story about working hard for a dream - no matter the odds.

Did you know that…
- The film marks the feature film acting debuts of both Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn. Favreau plays Rudy’s tutor D-Bob and Vaughn plays Jamie O’Hara.
- While based on true events, certain elements were added or altered. Most notably, the scene with the players laying their jerseys on the table never actually happened. Certain characters, like Rudy’s brother Frank and Fortune, are composites of several people. Rudy was, however, carried out as depicted in the film’s climax.
- The real-life Rudy Ruettiger and his father can be spotted in the crowd during the film’s final scenes. He’s to the left of Ned Beatty’s character, wearing a plaid cap and a dark coat.
